Sri Lanka’s east coast is home to one of the world’s top surf destinations – Arugam Bay. With its pristine sands, warm waters, shady coconut trees and consistent swells, this crescent bay attracts surfers from across the globe. Its bustling fishing community magnify the tropical coastal charm. Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or a beginner looking to catch your first wave, Arugam Bay has something for everyone. We take you through the best surf spots in this quaint town so you can ride the waves like a pro.
Located right in the heart of Arugam Bay, Main Point is the go-to spot for experienced surfers. This high-powered right-hand reef break produces long, barrelling waves that reach 6-8 feet. It is for intermediate and advanced surfers only. The best time to surf here is between May and September. It is when the southwest monsoon delivers the finest swells. If high-octane surfing is on your agenda, Main Point is the place to be.
Its playful waves form two right-hand surf breaks: one for beginners and another for more advanced surfers. The outer break offers a high-performing long ride, while the inside break is gentle and forgiving – perfect for first-timers. Waves can reach 3-8 feet and sometimes will barrel. The waves, which come off a rock, offer 100 – 300-metre rides. Since it’s a little further from town, this spot is less crowded, offering a more peaceful and intimate surfing experience. It is best between July and November.
If you’re searching for an off-the-beaten-path experience, Elephant Rock is the place to go. This secluded surf spot is ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers, offering mellow waves and stunning surroundings. The beach, named after the giant rock formation nearby, is another boulder point along this coast. Sunset views from the top of the rock are spectacular. You might even spot real elephants in the distance and also crocodiles in the lagoon.
Okanda, the furthest from Arugam Bay, is a challenging spot and a thrill for those who enjoy pushing their limits. This remote break offers strong, fast waves with powerful swells that require skill and experience to navigate. There are three different point breaks, with the massive offering swells reaching 8-10 feet and long rides. Since it is on the doorstep of Kumana National Park, the journey to Okanda proves to be a double whammy. Due to its distance, there are fewer crowds here.
Lighthouse is a lesser-known but fantastic surf spot located a short drive from Arugam Bay. It offers a mix of waves suitable for both beginners and advanced surfers. The 3 waves at Lighthouse are all merry right-hand point breaks, setting you up for mellow takeoffs. The break provides 50-100 metres long, clean rides, and thanks to its relatively uncrowded nature, you’ll have plenty of space to perfect your technique. Komari Lagoon offers a serene backdrop, and the views of an old colonial-era lighthouse make this a charming spot.
Located close to Main Point, Baby Point is the ideal surf break for beginners looking to build their confidence. This gentle right-hand wave rolls smoothly, making it perfect for learning how to balance, paddle, and stand up on the board. The sandy bottom ensures a safer experience, and the smaller waves allow for easy practice sessions. Whether taking your first surf lesson or enjoying a relaxed ride, Baby Point is a must-visit for newcomers to the sport.
A short drive north of Arugam Bay, Whisky Point is an excellent spot for beginners and intermediate surfers. This break offers smooth, rolling waves with a sandy bottom, making it safer for those perfecting their skills. Generally swelling to 2-3 metres, this right-hand point break delivers 50-150-metre rides and some sections. The sunrise surf sessions here are truly magical, and the relaxed beach vibes make it a great place to unwind after riding the waves. However, lately, waves have become less predictable here.
The peak surf season in Arugam Bay runs from April to October. Swells are at their best during this time. The southwest monsoon brings consistent swells and offshore winds, creating clean, well-formed waves perfect for riding. The water temperature remains warm throughout the year. It means you can skip the wetsuit if you like.
